The Mountaineers (7-1) lost their first game of the 2006-07 season, losing to the Willamette University Bearcats (1-1) 84-81.  Willamette shot an impressive 60 percent from the floor, with four different players scoring 14 or more points.

Eastern Oregon came out slow in the first half, as a stagnant pace and methodical style of basketball led to a 28-28 tie at halftime.  In the second half Willamette was able to claim a small lead, which the Mountaineers could never overcome.  In the final seconds of the game Eastern found themselves with the ball and down three points.

However, a three point shot by junior Nick Finley just rimmed out at the buzzer and Eastern’s win streak of seven straight was snapped.  The Mounties missed their opportunities at the free throw line, missing eight free throws down the stretch.

Eastern was again led in scoring by sophomore Neil Fryer, who had 24 points off the bench.  Classmate Tanner McIntosh had 17 points of his own to go along with a team high ten rebounds.

For the Bearcats, Freshman Dan Nugent led all scorers with 20 points.  Nugent, along with Eastern Oregon’s Fryer, Albertsons Ike Stafford and Westminster’s Nick Booth and Danny Reeder were named to the all-tournament team.

Eastern will open up conference play on Friday December 1, in Caldwell against Albertsons College ‘Yotes (4-0).  The game will start at 7:30 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
