The Eastern Oregon Mountaineers (7-0) defeated the Westminster Griffins (3-3) 85-73 in the second game of the 20th annual Duane Wolfe Memorial Golden Rule Shoot-out.  A trio of sophomores led the charge for the Mounties, who improved to 7-0 for the first time in the program’s history.

Neil Fryer came off the bench to lead all scorers with 25.  Paul Carollo had 14 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double and Jeremy Templeton had 16 points of his own.  Junior Mark Carollo and sophomore Tanner McIntosh had nine points apiece.

The Mountaineers got off to a somewhat slow start but, with Fryer’s effort off the bench, were able to lead by ten points at the intermission, 47-37.  However a pesky Westminster crew hung around the entire second half, cutting the lead to single digits at various points in the half.

The Griffin’s Danny Reeder, the Frontier Conference Player Of the Year last year, was held to ten points and five assists in 37 minutes of action.  Four other Griffins scored in double figures including Nick Booth who had a team high 19 points.

Eastern shot 63 percent from the field in the first half, while Westminster shot 50 percent themselves.  However, in the second half the Mountaineers were able to hold the Griffins to just 37 percent in the second half, including a meager 5-of-16 from the beyond the arc.

The Mountaineers return to action tomorrow against the Willamette University Bearcats at 7:30 p.m. Mountain Time.
