Eastern found themselves down eleven points at halftime against NCAA Division II Northwest Nazarene University, shooting just 34% in the first frame. However, an emphasis on getting the ball inside in the second half allowed the Mountaineers to come from behind and defeat the Crusaders 69-63.
After the intermission the Mounties shot a sizzling 64% and scored 49 points led by sophomore forward Paul Carollo’s 19 points and 10 rebounds, 12 of those points came in the second half. The Mountaineers also had strong performances by Mark Carollo 16 points and 5 rebounds, Derek Brown and Jeremy Templeton added 13 and 12 points respectively.
Head Coach Ryan Looney was proud of the way his team responded after halftime, “After facing some adversity in the first half our players were able to find some toughness and make some adjustments in the second half.”
The Crusaders where led by 6’8 junior post Jason Simmons’s 18 points, senior point guard Marcus Clift added 14, all of which were in the first half.
Eastern will return to action Wednesday night when they face NCAA Division I Eastern Washington University in an exhibition contest. The game will be played at 7:30pm in Cheney.
