Senior guard Christie Weaver has been named Cascade Conference Player of the Week after two stellar performances against Northwest University and The Evergreen State College. Weaver Scored 20 points and hauled in a career high 17 rebounds in a 75-66 win over Northwest on Friday night. She followed up that performance with 22 points and 7 rebounds on Saturday night against Evergreen.
Weaver is no stranger to these sort of accolades. As a freshman at La Grande High School Christie was named Freshman of the year in the Intermountain Conference. That season she saw considerable playing time on a team that placed 8th in the state 4A. The following year as a sophomore, La Grande moved to 3A and Weaver was named Greater Oregon League Most Valuable Player. That team finished 3rd in the state and Christie was named to the All-State team. Her junior and senior seasons led to more awards. After both seasons she was named All-Conference and All-State on teams that finished 2nd and 8th in the state.
So, when Christie decided to give up her full ride scholarship to NCAA Division I Boise State and enroll at Eastern she did what she always did...win.
In her four seasons, EOU has a record of 80-22 a winning percentage of .725. While Weaver is quick to point out that basketball is a team game, their is no question that she had a major impact on the success of those teams. Christie's 1272 career points puts her in 5th place on Eastern's all-time list and with at least 13 games left on this seasons schedule she is still climbing the ladder.
Head Coach Anji Weissenfluh said of Weaver, "She is the ultimate team player." Weissenfluh went on to complement her on her maturity and growth over her career at Eastern. "Christie would sacrifice anything for team success."
This season Coach Weissenfluh asked the senior to be more aggressive offensively. To put the ball on the floor and attack the basket, something Weaver was not entirely comfortable with. You see Christie Weaver, quite simply is the best shooter to play at EOU. Her 238 career 3 pointers places her comfortably ahead of Tricia Haddocks 2nd place mark of 171, she also boasts the highest career 3 point percentage (39%) of any player with at least 25 shots made.
After taking some time to adjust, Weaver did what the coach asked. Over the weekend she shot 10 free throws, making nine of them, a positive sign that the shooter is mixing up her game.
