La Grande, Ore. – EOU women’s basketball team was picked to finish 2nd in the most recent Cascade Conference (CCC) coaches poll.
The Mountaineers were 24-7 last year and finished the season tied for 2nd place with Corban in the CCC.
“It's nice to be shown respect from the conference, but at the same time it's not about where you are ranked preseason, it's all about where you end up,” said Head Coach Anji Weissenfluh. “We will have to work extremely hard to reach our goals this season.”
Weissenfluh returns nine players from last years team and anticipates that they will lead the way this season. “Our new players are adjusting well to the high expectations of this program and trying hard to learn the system. The returners have also stepped up to in order to help prepare them.”
Weissenfluh is entering her seventh season at the helm of the Mountaineer women’s basketball program and has compiled the best winning percentage (112-52, .683) in school history. “We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to be successful,” said Weissenfluh. “Even though we have set high goals for this season we don't want to forget to enjoy the journey.”
Finishing atop the CCC will be no easy journey for any team this year. “I believe there are going to be some much improved teams this year,” Weissenfluh commented. “A number of schools have had an outstanding recruiting year. I think there will be a lot of parity between first through sixth place in the CCC. We will have to battle each night.”
The Mountaineers begin their season on Saturday, October 28 against the EOU Alumni. Tip off is at 5:30pm in Quinn Coliseum.
