Eastern Oregon Earns Another Conference Title

La Grande Ore.  The Eastern Oregon University Mountaineer Women's Basketball Team (23-5, 15-3) reeled off its 11 consecutive win when they defeated The Albertson College Coyotes (18-9, 14-4) Friday night 60-55 in Quinn Coliseum.

The win clinched at least a share of the Cascade Conference regular season crown. It is the 3rd such title in the last five years. The Corban College Warriors from Salem Oregon are tied in the loss column with one game left on their schedule. A Corban loss to Southern Oregon Saturday night would give The Mounties the championship outright

Sheena Henderson led all scorers with 19 points on 7-16 shooting from the field. She was a force around the basket all night long, also pulling down 6 rebounds. Eastern also got another strong performance from point guard Whitney Leman who recorded 15 points on 4-7 shooting, including 4-6 from deep.

The Mountaineers saw some terrific performances from its seniors playing in their last regular season game ever at Quinn. While Alberson was able to contain EOU's leading scorer Christie Weaver, who finished with just 2 points, the senior was able to contribute hauling in a game-high 10 boards.

Fellow seniors Candice Davis and Liz Brice also made their presence felt Friday night. Davis, who got the start tonight, scored an early basket and made a couple of key defensive stops that seemed to get the team and the crowd energized. Meanwhile, it was Brice who picked up the scoring in the first half when Eastern was struggling putting the ball in the basket. The senior from Burley Idaho had all eight of her points in the first half.

EOU will host the first round of the Cascade Conference Playoffs Tuesday night at 7:00 pm. The opponent is yet to be determined as several conference teams finish their regular season schedule on Saturday.

Tickets for Tuesday nights contest will go on sale Monday morning at 10:00am.
