TUCSON, Ariz. - Less than 48 hours after playing in La Grande where temperatures were hovering around 40 degrees the Eastern Oregon University Softball team found themselves battling more than the opposition.
The Mounties had to deal with the 88 degree Southwest heat as they played their first two games at the Tucson Tournament in Tucson, Arizona. Eastern came away with split, beating Mcpherson College 7-3 but stumbling later to Taylor University 8-7 in 10 innings.
Melodee Mildenberger picked up the win in impressive fashion against the Mcpherson Bulldogs. The senior dealt 11 strikeouts in what Head Coach Missy Wheeler deemed, "her best game of the season."
The second game saw a gutsy performance by fellow senior Kelly West who managed to pitch all 10 innings against Taylor. In the end West was given the loss but Wheeler blames the loss on untimely errors defensively. "We had three errors in one inning that ended up costing us the game." "I was proud of Kelly for hanging in there though the heat."
Offensively, Ali Stosich and Megan Monoghan were very good. Stosich finished the day 5-7 with 4 RBI and Monoghan filled in for the injured Lindsey Smith nicely going 4-7 with 2 RBI. Melodee Mildenberger also helped out at the plate going 4-5 with 2 RBI.
Eastern will crank it back up tomorrow morning when they face Viola in a double header. The first pitch is set for 9:00am.
