La Grande, Ore- The night began and ended with the freshman, as EOU softball defeated Walla Walla College in both Thursday evening’s games. In the season opener, freshman pitcher Emma Hubbard recorded her first collegiate victory with an 11-6 win over the visiting wolf pack. She was helped by teammates who drove three runs in the first inning and continued their hot streak through out the remainder of the contest. Hubbard pitched again to close the second game of the night.
Game two brought another great start for the mountaineers. Starting pitcher, Melodee Mildenberger, opened the first inning with three strikeouts. Three runs in the bottom of the inning off Eastern’s bats showed they had not slowed down during the intermission. The Mounties played excellent defense and their hitting stayed hot on the way to a 10-1 victory. The game was stopped after the fifth inning due to the 8-run mercy rule. Mountie head coach Missy Wheeler was pleased with the way the team performed. “We always do a good job of hitting the bombs, and tonight we put runners on in front of that, like we have wanted to do all year” said Wheeler.
The Mounties will look to add to their win streak when they host to Northwest Christian College on Friday. The team will then prepare to face the three top conference teams next week (#24 Albertson, # 13 OIT and Southern Oregon) along with the defending national champions (#3 Simon Fraser). When asked about the teams left on the schedule Wheeler said, “We’ll have some tough competition at the end [of the year] but it’s not by any means out of reach.”
