Juco Standout Commits to Eastern

LA GRANDE, Oregon – Late this summer and after the completion of the best season in program history Head Coach Ryan Looney and the Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball program received a commitment from a fourth recruit according to Looney.

 

 

Steve Sawyers, a 6-foot-5, 215 pound forward from South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, Arizona has signed a letter of intent and financial contract to attend EOU in September.  This past season Sawyers averaged 9.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, and shot a remarkable .593 from the floor.  His field goal percentage ranked him first in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference.  For his efforts he was recognized as an Honorable Mention All-ACCAC selection.  South Mountain Community College finished the 2006-2007 season with an overall record of 21-8 and participated in the championship game of the ACCAC tournament.

 

 

Sawyers, originally from Chicago, Illinois graduated from Thornwood High School.  During his senior season playing alongside current NBA player Eddy Curry he helped his team advance to the championship game of the Illinois Class AA State Tournament.

 

 

“Steve is exactly the type of player that we had hoped to find and add to our roster,” said Looney.  “He is an energy guy that can really defend, rebound, and shoot at a very high percentage.  The thing that attracted us most to him is his physical strength and his ability to defend all five positions on the floor.”

 

 

Sawyers is the fourth player to sign with EOU this recruiting season.  He joins Nate Bligh of Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho (Coeur d’ Alene High School), Beau Azadganian of Spokane, Washington (Gonzaga Prep), and Nick Ambrose of Spokane, Washington (Central Valley High School).

 

 

The Mountaineers compiled a 23-8 record during the 2006-2007 season and advanced to the championship game of the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament.  The 23 wins were the most in EOU Men's Basketball history.
