La Grande, Ore. - The Mountaineers defeated Montana Tech 72-63 in the second game of the 8th annual Aramark Quinn Classic. The team was led by Junior Mark Carollo with 22 points.
Eastern started strong, leading at one point in the first half by double digits. However the Orediggers refused to go away and only trailed by one at the intermission.
The Mountaineers came out in the second half and slowly built a lead on the post play of sophomore Paul Carollo who had 15 points and six rebounds. “Early in the second half we made an emphasis to get the ball to the post,” said Head Coach Ryan Looney. “Paul did a great job of demanding the ball.”
Sophomores Tanner McIntosh tossed in 17 points and Jeremy Templeton had six assists. “Tanner did a great job of taking what the defense gave him,” said Looney. “Jeremy continued to do a great job running our team.”
Saturday the Mountaineers will face Montana-Western at 8:00 p.m. in “Montana-Western will provide us with another opportunity to play a quality basketball team in preparation for conference play,” Looney said.
Montana Tech will play Albertsons College, which defeated Montana-Western in the 6:00 p.m. game of the tournament. Albertsons won 129-120 in overtime. Ike Stafford led the ‘Yotes with 29 points, while Josh Owen had 26 of his own. Montana-Western’s Tyler Palmer led all scorers with 37 points.
Montana-Western shot 70% from the floor and out rebounded Albertsons 45-24. However, the Bulldogs committed 53 turnovers. Albertsons and Montana Tech will face off on Saturday at 6:00 pm. followed by the Mountaineers and Montana-Western at 8:00 p.m.
