Mountaineers Picked to Finish Third in Conference

September 13, 2006

La Grande, Ore. - Eastern Oregon’s men’s basketball team was picked to finish third in yesterday’s Cascade Conference preseason poll.

Head Coach Ryan Looney guided the Mountaineers to a 17-11 record in 2005-06 after the team went 4-22 during their previous campaign.  The two-year turnaround was amongst the best in school history and in the country last year.

"The Cascade Conference is a very competitive league and it is nice to see that our peers think highly of our team,” Looney said.  “There are a number of quality programs in the conference right now and we hope to put together a special season this year."

Looney returns three starters and ten players from last year’s roster.  The returning starters are senior Derek Brown (Spokane, Wash.), junior Mark Carollo (Hermiston, Ore.), and sophomore Tanner McIntosh (Imbler, Ore.).

"Our program has come a long way in two years.  The work habits and character of our student-athletes are outstanding," Looney said.  “It is nice to see that they are receiving some recognition."

The Mountaineers begin the season with an exhibition game against the alumni on October 28 at 7:30pm in Quinn Coliseum.
