Caldwell, Id. It was a historical night for The Eastern Oregon University Mountaineer Men's Basketball Team (22-7) Wednesday night as they won their school record 22nd game of the season. The Mounties defeated the 20th ranked Albertson College Coyotes (19-7) on their floor 70-65. The win was the first in the conference tournament since the early 90's.
Hermiston native Mark Carollo lead the way scoring a game-high 20 points, 16 of which came in the first half. Carollo, who has been making his way back from an ankle injury that caused the sharpshooter to miss six critical conference games, punctuated his night by converting on a four point play at the end of the first half. The play gave Eastern a 13 point lead at the intermission.
The Mounties went into the break on a high note when a large Eastern fan base sent the team into the locker room with chants of "E.O.U.".
Forward Paul Carollo tallied his 13th double-double of the season scoring 12 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. The sophomore was a force around the basket from start to finish. Fellow sophomore Jeremy Templeton scored 12 points, 9 of those coming before the intermission.
While Eastern led the game by as many as 18 points in the second half the scrappy Yotes cut that lead to three with 35 seconds to go. However, EOU converted their free throws down the stretch to hold off ACI.
The Mounties advance the CCC Tournament Semifinals Saturday night. They will face the # 3 seed Northwest University (24-7) in Kirkland Washington.
