SALEM, Ore. - The story is becoming all too familiar. The Mountie Men got off to another slow start and had to struggle for 40 minutes just for a chance to win the game late. Tonight's opponent, Corban College (7-12, 2-7 CCC) gave #10 EOU all they could handle before the Mountaineers rallied to beat the Warriors 70-68.
Down two points with 12 seconds remaining after a Corban College miss at the free throw line, Nick Finley dribbled the length of the court and found an open Dan Blanchard. The senior forward immediately fired up a 17 footer to tie the game.
At the same time senior Kyle Janke was battling for offensive rebounding position when he was fouled by Corban's Wade Douglas with four seconds left. A 54% free throw shooter on the season had nearly air balled one of his last attempts. But with the game hanging in the balance Janke calmly sank both to give the Mounties their 14th win of the season.
Eastern found themselves down as much as 14 points in the second half before slowly inching back into the game. The Mounties did not get any help from the 3 point line as they shot a season low 11% (3-26) from behind the arc.
They did, however make up for their shooting deficiencies by winning the battle of the boards. Eastern out rebounded the Warriors by 22. The Mounties hauled in 51 rebounds, including 22 on the offensive end.
Senior standout Mark Carollo once again led the Mountaineers with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Jeremy Templeton scored 12 points and 5 rebounds, Janke ended up with 10 points and 6 boards.
EOU will travel north to play Concordia Saturday night. The game is set to tip off at 7:30pm.
