VANCOUVER, B.C. - The Eastern Oregon
University men's cross country team dominated the field at the 2003
Cascade Collegiate Conference/NAIA Region I Cross Country
Championships today as they easily outdistanced 10 other teams in
winning the conference and regional titles. The women's team
finished 5th in one of the strongest women's cross country regions in
the NAIA.
Alex McGladrey claimed the
Cascade Collegiate Conference individual title. Last year,
Eastern's Bran Crowl claimed both Conference and regional titles.
The Mountaineer men are guaranteed an
invite to "The Big Run" in Louisville on November 22, but
the EOU women will have to see if their hopes come true as the fifth
team taken from the region.
If the women's team does not receive a
berth to national, Kelsey Jones, Jessyca Barker, and
possibly Shannon Edward could be making the trip.
Jones led all Mountaineer runners,
finishing 6th in the region race (3rd for the CCC meet) in a time of
18:17.83. That finish garnered Jones All-Region and
All-Conference accolades.
Barker finished 22 seconds behind her
teammate (18:39.56) in 13th place. That time just missed the
All-Region team, but it did give her another All-Conference award to
go with 2002's.
In the men's race, McGladrey, Eric
Griffiths, Tim Riley and Brian Crowl all finished in
the top-10, giving each All-Region status. McGladrey, Griffiths
and Riley finished 1-2-3 in the Conference meet.
McGladrey finished in 3rd place overall
and first in conference with a time of 25 minutes, 14.39 seconds over
the 8000 meter course. Griffith (25:16.79) and Riley (25:23.19)
finished back to back, in fifth and sixth places overall,
respectively.
Last year's conference and regional
champion, Brian Crowl ran the course in 25 minutes, 45.80 seconds for
10th place for the an All-Conference nod and the final All-Region
spot.
Also winning All-Conference awards were
All-American Michael Greenman and Ian Schroeder.
Greenman finshed 9th in the conference race and 17th overall in a time
of 26:28.42, while Schroeder ended the race right behind Greenman in
18th (10th CCC) with a time of 26:29.74.
The final two male runners for the
Mountaineers finished just out of the Conference top-10 in 11th and
12th places. Pat Egelus and Samuel Wambugu each
ran very well, as they complete the 8k course in 26:44.90 and
26:57.78, respectively, for 20th and 23rd places.
Monday will be a tense day for the
Mountaineer women's team as they will have to wait for a phone call
for the NAIA to see if they have made the field of 28 teams to compete
in Louisville.
