VANCOUVER, B.C. - Tomorrow morning, the
Eastern Oregon University men's and women's cross country teams will
look to add to the 'ol Mountaineer trophy case when they participate
at the Cascade Collegiate Conference & NAIA Region I Championships
at Jericho Beach Park in Vancouver.
This is the first time that the
University of British Columbia has hosted the meet and it should be
thrilling, as the NAIA's two #1 teams will be participating: Eastern
Oregon for the men and Northwest for the Women.
Men
The men's team, currently ranked No. 1
in the nation, will be looking for their 11th straight Cascade
Collegiate Conference cross country title.
Because of their #1 ranking, the men's
team is assured a spot at NAIA National Cross Country Championships in
Louisville later this month, but that does not detour head coach Ben
Welch and his Mountaineer runners.
"The men should have a fairly good
time of it this weekend," said Welch. "They looked
VERY good in their last hard workout last Friday. They appear to
be relaxed, focused and ready to roll."
Welch is looking for senior leadership
from his top-rated squad. He is looking for senior Tim Riley,
and red-shirt juniors Alex McGladrey, and Eric Griffith
to lead the way to victory over a not very deep field of teams.
Women
The women's race should be one of the
best held this year... if not one of the best out of the 14 NAIA
Regional meets.
This race will consist of five top-25
rated NAIA teams, including the top-ranked and defending national
champion Northwest College.
"Our women are going to have to
race very well to get to Kentucky on an at-large berth, but I'm
confident (the women) will give it their best effort," stated
Welch.
Welch is also excited about Kelsey
Jones' or Jessyca Barker's chances to advance to National
as individual qualifiers.
"With the top-5 non-team
qualifiers advancing to nationals, I think Kelsey and Jessyca have a
real good chance of getting to Louisville," said Welch.
"Of those competing in the meet, Kelsey has only been beaten by
(Northwest's) Kristina Proticova, so she should have a real nice
shot at an individual title."
The NAIA National Cross Country
Championships will take place at Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville,
Ky. on November 22. Women's meet is schedule for 10:30 am, with
the men following at 11:45 am.
