SALEM - Eastern Oregon men's team
placed five runners in the top-25 of the 250-runner field at this
year's Willamette Invitational to garner top spot in the NCAA III/NAIA
classification. Only CSU-Chico (NCAA II) finished 13 points
higher.
Eastern's Tim Riley finished
third overall and first in the NCAA III/NAIA classification with a
time of 24 minutes, 20.68 seconds.
Also finishing in the top-25 was Alex
McGladrey (7th, 24:29.96), Eric Griffiths (10th, 24:37.87),
Ian Schroeder (19th, 25:01.88), and Brian Crowl (23rd,
25:07.25)
The performance at Salem should move
the Mountaineers back to the top of the polls after dropping to 2nd
place last Friday. Eastern Oregon easily outdistanced other
top-25 teams that were competing at Willamette: Concordia, Calif.
(12th), Vanguard, Calif. (17), Alliance International, Calif. (20),
British Columbia (21), Lewis-Clark State, Idaho (24), Point Loma
Nazarene, Calif. (25).
On the women's side, the Mountaineer
squad finished strong in ninth place overall and seventh in the NCAA
III/NAIA class.
Kelsey Jones was the pride of the
women's team as she equaled the effort of teammate Riley with the
third place finish overall and first in class with a time of 17
minutes, 55.22 seconds.
Also finishing strong was Jessyca
Barker (30th, 18:37.51) and Shannon Edwards (89th, 19:28.52).
Both teams will compete next weekend on
home turf as they host the Eastern Oregon University Open as part of
Homecoming 2003 festivities Saturday. First gun will be at 10 am
next to the track & field complex.
