OLATHE, Kan. - The National
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has released its first
ranking of the 2003 cross country season and the Eastern Oregon
University men's team maintained their No. 1 position from the
pre-season poll release three weeks hence, while the women's team has
slipped from 9th to 13th.
The men's team has one meet as an
"A" squad under their belt with a second place finish at the
University of Portland (NCAA I) Pier Park meet on September 12.
"I was pleased with the men's
performance in Portland," Welch added. 'This is a nice
reward for the all the pre-season work, but we still have a ways to
go."
The women's team has run in two races
(Whitman and Lewis & Clark Invites) in which injuries have not
allowed the team to compete at full strength, leading to the
four-place drop in the polls.
"I'm encourage at the position of
the women's team, " said head coach Ben Welch. "The
women have had to fight through some pre-season injuries and we're
just starting to get healthy."
A couple of Mountaineers will travel to
Louisville, Ky. for an NAIA Championship meet preview meet on
September 27. Senior Kelsey Jones (Seward, Alaska) and
junior Jessyca Barker (La Grande, Ore.), two of the women's top
thinclads will run for Eastern Oregon University in the meet.
The next meet that both team will
compete at will be the Willamette University Invitational on October 4
in Salem.
