LA GRANDE, Ore.
- Head women's basketball coach
Anji Weissenfluh has announced the signing of Madras' Tiffanie
Sperry, Elise Hawes, and Tara Prow to Letters of
Intent for the 2004-05 basketball season.
Tiffanie Sperry, a 5-foot-8
transfer from Clark College in Vancouver, Wash., played for the
Penguins during the 2001-02 and 2003-04 seasons; red-shirting the
2002-03 season. In her senior year at Madras, she was named to
the second team All-Greater Oregon League and she was a member of the
White Buffaloes second place state tournament team in 2000-01.
Sperry also was named first-team All-GOL in soccer.
Coach Weissenfluh on Sperry:
"Sperry is a marvelous athlete that is very versatile. She will
be able to be a force for us inside and out. Her ability to see the
floor and make the extra pass will be beneficial in our running game.
Tiffanie has the scoring ability to be a 'go-to player'."
Elise Hawes, 5-foot-9 forward,
comes to La Grande fresh off an OSAA 3A state basketball championship
last season. During the 2003-04 season, named 1st team All-Tri
Valley League and honorable mention All-State. Hawes averaged 13
points, seven rebounds and four assists in her senior season for the
White Buffaloes. During her junior season, Hawes was named
second-team All-State during Madras' state title run.
Hawes, like Sperry, was an outstanding
soccer player for Madras. Elise, was named first-team All-League
and 2nd team All-State goalkeeper in 2003. Madras lost in the
first round of the OSAA girls soccer tournament to Gladstone, who also
beat the Lady Buffaloes in a Tri-Valley League playoff tie breaker.
Hawes was named a Tri-Valley League
scholar-athlete and is a member of the National Honor Society.
Coach Weissenfluh on Hawes:
"Elise is another outstanding athlete. She will be able to
play a variety of positions for us. She has played a huge role
in Madras' success at the state tournament. Her experience in big
games will be very valuable to our program. Elise is not only a very
talented athlete but a great student."
Tara Prow, a 5-foot-6 guard, was
teammate with Hawes on their state championship team in 2002-03.
She was named honorable mention All-Tri Valley League last
season. In her senior season, Prow averaged 12 points per game
and was named OregonLive.com 3A Girls' Player of the Week for December
29-January 4.
Prow also has two years of varsity
softball and a year of varsity soccer experience. She was twice
named All-Tri Valley League scholar-athlete.
Coach Weissenfluh on Prow: "We
are counting on Tara to help us on the defensive end. Tara is a
tremendous defensive player. Tara has had the opportunity to play in
one of the top 3A programs in the state and that experience will help
her succeed at the college level."
