LA GRANDE, Ore. – Tomorrow night the
Mountaineer athletic department will honor their seniors, but it was a
special night for one senior in particular, as Eastern Oregon (22-2,
16-1 CCC) used a 15-6 run over the final five minutes of the first
half and never looked back in a 77-59 win over Western Baptist.
Eastern Oregon's Tricia Haddock
(5-4, Sr., Guard, Parma, Idaho) set another school record with 13
assists in a single game, breaking her own mark that was tied with
head coach Anji Weissenlfuh (vs. Warner Pacific, 1991) and Sarah
Wilder (vs. Pacific, 1996). Earlier this season, Haddock had 12
assists just last weekend against Southern Oregon.
Haddock became the first Mountaineer
women's basketball player to have 500 assists in her career.
Haddock needed just eight assists tonight to surpass the milestone and
it came at the 18:32 mark of the second half on a pass to Candice
Davis who hit a little jumper for Haddock's 500th assist.
Interesting point that Haddock broke
the all-time career mark held by Weissenfluh on a pass to Davis, who
put away a little lay-up on an inbounds pass.
The win also set a new standard for
consecutive victories by a women's team with their 15th straight win
this evening. The old record of 14 straight was set by the
2001-02 team that ended up winning the Cascade Collegiate Conference
regular-season title, but since the Conference only had nine members,
they did not receive an automatic berth to nationals.
Eastern Oregon shot 50% for the game,
as the Mountaineers torched the nets from outside, draining 11-of-19
attempts from behind the three-point arc. They also outrebounded
the Warriors, 33-28
Along with her 14 points on 4-of-7
shooting from behind the arc and 2-of-2 from the free throw line,
Haddock's double-double was her first of the 2003-04 season.
The Mountaineers started the second
half right where they left off in the first half, running away from
the Warriors. Eastern Oregon outscored Western Baptist, 16-3 in
the first four minutes of the half to built a 22-point lead that the
Warriors would never recover from.
Jamie Jo Cant (5-7, Jr., Guard,
Imbler, Idaho) led all scorers with 15 points, on 6-of-10 shooting,
with 3 treys and 5 rebounds.
Two other Mountaineers scored in double
figures, as Candice Davis (5-9, So., Forward, Echo, Ore.) and Christie
Weaver (5-10, Fr., Forward, la Grande, Ore.) each chipped in with
10 points a piece.
Eastern Oregon senior Brye Quatre
(5-11, Sr., Forward, King City, Calif.) had a good game off the bench
with 6 points and 2 rebounds with 2 steals and a block in just 10
minutes of playing time.
Western Baptist was led by the 11
points of Lindsy Brownell and Toran Lundgren's 10 points.
The Mountaineers will finish up the
regular season tomorrow night against Concordia, who lost to Albertson
tonight, 71-60, in Caldwell. Game time is set for 5:30 pm at
Quinn Coliseum
