LA GRANDE, Ore. - A
weekend sweep of Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon aided the Mountaineer
women's basketball team to jump three spots to No. 17 in the latest
NAIA Division II coaches poll.
As the top four teams
remained the same from last week, Eastern Oregon's three-spot jump was
the second largest movement up in the poll this week, next to Goshen
(Ind.) six position move from No. 25 to No. 19.
The 84-49 win over
Southern Oregon was the first win at Southern Oregon for an EOU
women's basketball in 15 years. It was also the worst loss in
over 25 years for Southern at home.
The win also gave the
Mountaineers 21 wins for the season; second best since 1983-84, when
that team finished 23-9.
Eastern Oregon is also
in the midst of a 14-game winning streak. That ties the record
set in the 2001-02 team that went 20-5.
This weekend, Eastern
Oregon will face Western Baptist on Friday and then Concordia on
Saturday.
Western Baptist was
the last team that threatened to break the streak back on on January
13, when the Mountaineers had to come back to force overtime and
eventually win 74-71 in Salem.
The Mountaineers will
open up the CCC playoffs when they host the CCC's No. 8 seed at 7 PM
in Quinn Coliseum. That opponent is yet to be determined.
