Top 8
teams advance to CCC playoffs
x-clinched playoff berth
y-clinched home court 1st round
z-clinched CCC title and berth to NAIA national
tourney |
|
Last week the Eastern
Oregon Mountaineer women's basketball team took a step closer to
clinching their second Cascade Collegiate Conference title with a
73-62 win over Albertson in Caldwell.
That win solidified,
at least, a first-round home playoff game on February 24. If the
playoffs began today, Eastern Oregon would host Southern Oregon.
However, only two games separate fourth and eighth places in the CCC
table with two weekends left in the regular season.
... and south we
go...
The Mountaineers will
make their annual pilgrimage to Klamath Falls and Ashland this weekend
to face Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon .
Friday's matchup with
the second-place Owls could be very big. Not only will Eastern
Oregon be packing a 12-game win streak into the Klamath Basin, a win
will lock the CCC championship for EOU and a trip to Sioux City, Iowa
for the NAIA Women's Division II National Championship, March 10-16.
Saturday, the
Mountaineers will take on that Southern Oregon team that currently
sits in the eighth and final playoff spot.
Each contest is
scheduled for a 5:30 pm tip-off. Both games will have internet
broadcasts available. Oregon Tech Sports Information Director
Bobby Thompson will bring you the Mountaineers and Owls on Friday,
then Saturday, Pete Belcastro will have the Southern Oregon/Eastern
Oregon match-up. Links to both broadcast will be available at www.eou.edu/athletic
beginning Thursday afternoon.
Historical Note
If (or when) the
Mountaineers grab that automatic berth to the NAIA Women's Division II
National Championship tournament, it will be the first time ever a
women's basketball team from EOU will have qualified for the
post-season party!
In fact, it has been
61 years (1941-42) since the men's team last made a national
tournament appearance. During that appearance, the team from the
Grande Ronde Valley defeated Illinois Wesleyan in the first round,
then lost to Maryville (Mo.) in the quarterfinals.
Holding Steady
in the Women's Poll
The Mountaineers held
their 20th position in this week's NAIA Women's Division II
poll. More can be found at http://www2.eou.edu/athletic/news/wbx/20040210wbx_rankingupdate.html
