LA GRANDE, Ore. – This
time it didn't take a last second shot, nor overtime, but the outcome
was the same for the second straight game, as the Mountaineers rallied
from a 10-point second half deficit to upend a game Southern Oregon
squad, 74-71 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action tonight at Quinn
Coliseum.
They started fairly well, as the
Mountaineers jumped on the visiting Raiders early to build a 10-point
lead at 22-12 with nine minutes gone in the first half. But the crowd
of just under 300 watched as Southern Oregon outscored eastern Oregon
30-10 over the rest of the first period and the first 1 minute,

42-32.
Eastern Oregon fought back, as they
have all season long, to tie the game at 61-61 with 5:50 left in
regulation.
Both teams scored three points to
arrive at their third tie of the evening at 64-64, then the
Mountaineers would take the lead for good on two foul shots by Tricia
Haddock. Christy Smith would extend the lead to four
at 68-64 by converting a steal by Haddock into a layup with 3:40 left
on the game clock.
Both teams would trade a pair of points
before SOU's Jenna Ayers canned a three-pointer to cut the Mountaineer
lead to just a single point at 70-69.
Eastern's Smith canned another field
goal at the 1:13 mark to push the EOU lead back to three before
Southern's Camille Porter hit a jumper to make it 72-71 with exactly
one minute to go in the game.
With the shot clock winding down,
Haddock missed a three-point attempt, but Candice Davis grabbed
the offensive rebound and got it in the hand of Jamie Jo cant before
Emily Brough committed the foul to stop the clock with 23 seconds
left. Cant would can both charity tosses to give EOU the final
margin of 74-71.
SOU's Robyn Ward would cast a desperation
shot with 6 seconds left but it missed the mark and EOU would preserve
their 12th victory of the season.
Christy Smith led a quartet of
Mountaineers in double-figures with 18 points. Candice Davis and
Cory Nelson had 14 and 10 points, respectively. Michelle
Kinley posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
