SALEM, Ore. – Senior guard Tricia
Haddock picked a great time to hit her only field goal of the
night. Her 3-pointer with 4.3 seconds remaining in regulation sent the
game to overtime and Eastern Oregon went on to win a women’s Cascade
Collegiate Conference thriller over Western Baptist, 74-71.
The Mountaineers (11-2, 5-1 CCC) won
their fourth straight and overcame a seven-point deficit with just
three minutes left in the second half, outscoring the Warriors (8-8,
2-4 CCC) 12-5 down the stretch.
Jamie Jo Cant finished with 24
points and seven rebounds to lead Eastern Oregon and pulled the
visitors to within one, 61-60, with a triple of her own with 17
seconds on the clock. Two free throws by Western Baptist’s Tosha
Wilson made it 63-60 with 10.3 ticks remaining – setting up
Haddock’s delivery that sent the game to overtime.
The Warriors tallied the first two
baskets in the extra period, but Cant’s third trey of the
game put the Mountaineers up for good, 70-67, with 1:10 remaining –
part of a 10-0 Eastern Oregon surge.
Jessi Schaumburg paced Western Baptist
with 17 points, while Lindsy Brownell had 13 points and five
assists. Toran Lundgren issued a double-double with 11
points and 11 rebounds before fouling out in overtime. WB shot
46 percent (27-59) for the game, but was hampered by 26 turnovers.
Candice Davis and Michelle
Kinley reached double digits for Eastern Oregon with 11 and 10
points respectively. Haddock dished a game-high seven assists.
The Mountaineers shot 44 percent (28-64) from the floor and both teams
had six 3-pointers.
Schaumburg tallied 12 points in the
first period and helped the Warriors jump to an early 9-2 advantage.
But the Mountaineers scored 12 of the next 14 points to take their
biggest lead of the half, 14-11. WB scored the final five points
of the stanza to lead at the break, 32-26.
A triple by Schaumburg broke a 46-46
tie midway through the second half and Western Baptist pushed its lead
to 58-51 with 3:18 remaining before Eastern Oregon rallied for
overtime.
The Warriors and Mountaineers continue
conference play on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Western Baptist travels
to Warner Pacific and Eastern Oregon entertains Southern Oregon.
