Out duel Boxers,
Win 90-72
Three Double-Doubles Pace Mountaineer Win
December 12, 2003
LA GRANDE, Ore. - Eastern Oregon's Cory
Nelson, Jamie Jo Cant, and Michelle Kinley, each
scored double-doubles in scoring and rebounds, while Tricia Haddock
missed hers by a single assist, as Eastern outscored Pacific
University (Ore. ), 50-33 in the second half to defeat the Boxers,
90-72, tonight at Quinn Coliseum.
Eastern's victory was sparked by a 10-3
run at the beginning of the second half, to break open what was a very
close, one-point game (40-39) at half time.
The Mountaineers kept stretching their
lead after that run, leading by 10 at the 11:31 mark of the second
half, then by 13 with 6:38 remaining. Finally, Pacific got the
lead back to nine on a Tori Nelson jumper with 2:59 left, but EOU's Christy
Smith put back a errant Cory Nelson shot to give the Mountaineers
an 11 point lead with two and a half minutes remaining.
On the ensuing Boxer possession,
Kristine Callan missed a running jumper that was corralled by Smith
and Pacific would have to foul EOU the rest of the way.
Eastern Oregon hit 14-of-16 free throws
in the final 2 minutes and 11 seconds to secure the victory.
The Mountaineers on the night shot 75%
from the line (24-32); 10-of-16 before Pacific had to foul.
Pacific ended the night 10-of-15 from the charity stripe.
Jamie Jo Cant led all scorers with 23
points and also had 10 rebounds. Tricia Haddock and Cory Nelson
each scored 17 and 14 points, respectively. Candice Davis
chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds. Michelle Kinley got
her double-double by scoring 17 points and grabbing 12 rebounds off
the bench.
All of the double-doubles this evening
were firsts for Eastern Oregon in 2003-04.
Pacific was led off the bench by Kristi
Poe's 18 points. DeeDee Arnall had the Boxers only double-double
with 20 points and 11 rebounds, before fouling out with 44 seconds
remaining.
The Mountaineers out rebounded Pacific
52-41 on the evening, while holding Pacific to just 37.5% (27-72)
shooting from the field, including 2-of-13 from three-point range in
the second half.
Eastern Oregon (5-1) will make the trip
of the Blue Mountains tomorrow night, as they take on the Walla Walla
College Wolves in College Place. Game time is set for 7 PM.
Eastern Oregon defeated Walla Walla,
83-42, last weekend at the Whitman College Wildhorse Resort Classic.
Pacific will regroup and take on
another Cascade Conference opponent, Warner Pacific, next Thursday in
Portland.
