One-fifth of the
season is history and the Eastern Oregon women's basketball team is
off to a very good 4-1 start.
Their best test of the
non-conference season will come Friday night when the Mountaineers
host a vastly improved Pacific University in Quinn Coliseum at 7 PM.
The Lady Boxers are
under the guidance of first-year head coach Jeff Thompson. The
team boasts an identical 4-1 record as the Mountaineers, with
victories over three other Cascade Conference schools: Evergreen
(74-71), Concordia (75-59), and Warner Pacific (72-60).
Pacific, however, is
not a mystery to head coach Anji Weissenfluh and the rest of her
Mountaineer team. The Boxers also participated in the Menlo
College tournament over Thanksgiving break. Pacific went 1-1 in
the classic style tournament, with a victory over host Menlo (74-54)
and a loss to Dominican (74-65).
At the tournament,
Pacific's Tori Nelson and DeeDee Arnall were named to the
all-tournament team as was Eastern's Tricia Haddock and Cory
Nelson. Tori Nelson was also named the tournament's Most
Valuable Player.
Both Nelson and Arnall
are averaging over 20 points and 5 rebounds per game. Nelson has
hit 16 three-pointers this season, while Arnall is shooting an
incredible 67% (38-57) from the floor.
The following night
(Saturday), Eastern Oregon will make the trip back over the Blue
Mountains to College Place to face the 3-9 Walla Walla Lady Wolves.
Last weekend, EOU
defeated Walla Walla, 83-42 in the second game of the Whitman College
Wildhorse Casino & Resort Classic. A game that saw junior Ashley
Jones score a career-high 15 points off the bench on 6-of-8
shooting from the field.
The game is schedule
for 7 PM in College Place.
