| Top 8 teams advance to CCC playoffs |
|
The Mountaineers (3-0)
are off to their best start, since the 1984-85 team also started 3-0.
That team went on to
end the season 19-9, but the Eastern Oregon's women's basketball team
has a ways to go before they match the Cascade Collegiate Conference
regular season championships team of two years ago.
The 2001-02
Mountaineers lost their first game of the year to Puget Sound and then
went on a school-record 14-game win streak, ending 20-5.
Friday and Saturday,
Eastern Oregon will participate in the Whitman College Wildhorse
Casino Resort Tournament in Walla Walla, Wash.
The Mountaineers will
open up the tournament with the host Whitman College Lady
Missionaries.
Last weekend, Whitman
started their season up on the road at the Colorado College
tournament. The Lady Missionaries went 2-0 in Colorado Springs,
defeating Colorado College (64-50) and Concordia University of
Illinois (84-53).
Whitman is a well
balanced team, with balanced scoring. Five players average nine points
or better, and the team is scoring at a 74 point per game clip.
Their top scorer is sophomore guard Laura Vertatschitsch, with a 17.0
point per game average.
Saturday, the Eastern
Oregon will face Walla Walla College in the second day of the classic
style tournament.
The Lady Wolves are
3-7 on the season with victories over Cascade College, Oakwood College
(Ala.), and Pacific Union College (Calif.).
The Mountaineers and
Wolves have only met one other time. In 2001, Eastern soundly
defeated Walla Walla, 86-22 in La Grande. In that game, EOU held
Walla Walla to just 6 second-half points on one three-point field goal
and three free throws in the 20 minute period.
Next week, the ladies
will return to La Grande to face a tough Pacific University (Ore.)
ball club who is off to its best start in a decade. The Lady
Boxers are 4-1, with two players, Tori Nelson and DeeDee Arnall,
averaging 20-plus points a game.
The Boxers, along with
the Mountaineers, played in the Lady Oaks Invitational last weekend at
Menlo College. Pacific went 1-1 with a victory (74-54) over the
host team and a loss (74-65) to Dominican University.
Nelson and Arnall were
both named to the All-Tournament team along with EOU's Tricia Haddock
and Cory Nelson. Tori Nelson was named the tournament's MVP.
