ATHERTON, Calif. - The Mountaineer
women used a 65-point second half that erased a 12 point half time
deficit to defeat the University of California-Santa Cruz, 93-78, in
the first round of the Menlo College Holiday Classic.
Blame it on the Tryptophan or not, but
Eastern scored just 28 points in the period, shooting just 32% and not
hitting a single bucket from three-point range.
The second half was a whole new game,
as the Mountaineers took the action right at the Banana Slugs, hitting
on 54% (20-37) pace, while canning 7-of-11 bombs from behind the
three-point arc.
Eastern Oregon (2-0) forced UC-Santa
Cruz into 28 turnovers that led to 33 Mountaineer points.
Conversely, EOU committed just 8 miscues that turned into 4 Banana
Slug points.
Eastern Oregon placed five players in
double-figures led by Tricia Haddock (5-4, Sr, G, Parma, Idaho)
and her team-high 19 points. She also led everyone with 6
rebounds and 8 assists. Cory Nelson (5-10, Sr., F,
Homedale, Idaho) was next in line with 16 points. A trio of
Mountaineers had 14 points, including Jamie Jo Cant, Christy
Smith and Michelle Kinley.
Kinley's 14 points came from off the
bench in 25 minutes of play as starter Candice Davis found
herself in foul trouble picking up 4 fouls in just 4 minutes.
Eastern Oregon dished out 20 assists as
a team on their 32 field goals made.
The Mountaineers will play host Menlo
College on Saturday night at 5 pm.
