LA GRANDE - The Mountaineer women
jumped on Cascade College (0-5) early with tenacious defense that
helped open a 28-4 lead in a game that ended 92-60 in favor of
the home team.
Eastern Oregon (1-0) shot 56.1 % for
the game, as every Mountaineer on the game roster scored.
Everyone also had an assist and a rebound, except for Cory Nelson
(2 points, 4 rebounds) and Sarah Smith (11 points and 6
rebounds) missed their assists, and Christy Smith (8 points, 2
assists) did not get to a rebound.
Senior Michelle Kinley was tied
with Cascade's Molly Wilson for high-point honors with 23
points. Kinley hit 9-of-13 shots in and around the bucket.
Jamie Jo Cant was the only other Mountaineer in double-figures
with 13 points.
That tenacious EOU defense forced the
Thunderbirds into 32 turnovers, in which the Mountaineer contributed
to the high number of turnovers with 17 steals. However, a note
of concern for Coach Anji Weissenfluh was that Eastern committed 23
turnovers of their own.
Eastern Oregon will make their way to
Atherton, Calif. next weekend for the Thanksgiving holiday to
participate in the Menlo College Holiday Classic.
Eastern Oregon will face the famous
Banana Slugs of UC-Santa Cruz on Friday, then finish up with host
Menlo College on Saturday.
The Mountaineers will next play at home
on on December 12 when the host non-conference Pacific University
(Ore.) at 7 pm.
