After what will be 37
days of early morning practices, late evening practices, and even a
midnight practice; the Mountaineers will finally begin the regular
season on Saturday against Cascade College in a non-conference
match-up.
The Mountaineers
return a solid core of player from their 2002-03 squad that ended the
season 14-13 with a loss at Southern Oregon in overtime in the
conference semifinals.
Returning for Eastern
Oregon will be the starting backcourt tandem
of senior Tricia Haddock and junior Jamie Jo Cant.
The duo combined for 22.4 points, 9.1 rebounds, 5.7 assists, and 5.6
steals per game.
Cant was a 1st team
All-Conference selection in 2002-03 and named to the All-Freshman team
the previous year. Haddock was the Conference's Freshman of the
Year in 2000-01.
Also returning from
last year are seniors: Cory Nelson (forward, 8.6 ppg, 4.4 rpg),
Christy Smith (guard, 6.4 ppg, 4.0 rpg), Michelle Kinley
(forward, 6.1 ppg, 4.4 rpg).
Others returning to
the EOU lineup will be senior Brye Quatre (forward, 2 ppg, 15
min/g) junior Sarah Smith (post, 5-of-13 fg), and sophomores Ashley
Jones (guard, 1.6 ppg, 6.3 min/g) and Candice Smith
(forward, 3.6 ppg, 2.2 rpg).
New to the squad will
be freshman Christie Weaver from La Grande. Weaver, a
scoring machine from La Grande High School, was instrumental during
the Tigers run through the OSAA 3A tournaments the past two
seasons. Weaver was named 1st All-Tournament both seasons.
Transferring to the
Mountaineers in 2003-04 will be Linzi Strohm and Sandy
Isbell. Strohm, an Enterprise native, comes to La Grande
after two seasons at Linn-Benton Community College. Isbell, from
La Grande, spent a couple of seasons at Lane Community College.
Red-shirting this
season will be freshman guard Jessy Stephenson from Oakridge.
Cascade is currently
0-4 on the season with losses to Northwest Christian and Walla Walla
College. The team just completed a tournament at Lewis-Clark
State College over the weekend; losing to Montana Tech and the host
school.
The game will begin at
3 pm in Quinn Coliseum.
