LA GRANDE - Past met present tonight at
Quinn Coliseum on the front end of an alumni doubleheader with the
present day Mountaineers running past their elder statesmen (or
women), 94-37.
The alumni hung close as the two teams
traded baskets for the first four minutes of the game as the alums cut
an early varsity lead to 10-8 on a jumper by Tracy Harris.
The varsity then went on 39-5 run
over a span of 14-plus minutes to take a commanding 49-13 lead on the
way to a 51-19 halftime lead.
At the half, the varsity's Tricia
Haddock found herself as the game's high scorer with 20 points on
7-of-7 shooting, including an incredible 6 treys.
The second half would prove to more of
the same as the fresher, younger legs of the varsity just had to much
spring in them for the alumni to handle.
Haddock finished the evening with those
same 20 points as she had in the first half, as the senior guard from
Parma, Idaho gave way to some of other Mountaineers. Along with
her 20 points, Haddock also had 9 assists, and 3 rebounds.
Freshman Christy Weaver hit for
14 points and 7 rebounds in just 16 minutes.
Also scoring in double figures for the
current set of Mountaineers was Christy Smith and Sandy
Isbell, each with 11 points.
Brye Quatre led all players with
11 rebounds. The Mountaineers outrebounded their alumni
counterparts, 66-39.
Every varsity players had at least 2
points and 3 rebounds in the game.
The Alumni squad was led by Heather
Epeldi's 12 points, followed by Stephanie Shoemakers' 6 points and
Harris' 5 points. Katlin Lafferty and Epeldi led the alumni on
the boards with 8 and 7 rebounds, respectively.
The Mountaineers (proper) will open the
regular season next Saturday night, when they host the Cascade College
Thunderbirds in a non-conference match up at 7 pm at Quinn
Coliseum.
