LA GRANDE - If one believed in fate,
then tonight it was written earlier in the afternoon that the
Mountaineers would be victorious on Senior Night in La Grande.
The men's cross country won the NAIA
Region I/Cascade Collegiate Conference meet in Vancouver, B.C. and the
football team score a game-winning touchdown with nice seconds left in
regulation to defeat Puget Sound, so why not, get a win over Cascade
and complete the trifecta... and that's exactly what they did.
The Mountaineer's 13 kills from Jana
Brotherton and 12 kills from Kaki McLean in a 3-game sweep
over Cascade Collge (30-21, 30-27, 30-25) for their first
victory of the season at home and end 2003 on a winning note.
By far the best effort of the season by
Eastern Oregon, who ends the season 3-23 overall and 2-16 in Cascade
Collegiate Conference play. Many personal and team season highs
were set on the evening: Brotherton set a team season high for
individual attack percentage (.480, 13-1-25) and Tara Daly
topped the season total for dig in a game with 24.
As for the team as a whole, 43 assists
was tops on the season for a 3-game match, as was the 70 digs for the
evening.
Brotherton and Jamie Russell
each had four blocks, while Misty Jenkin and Jeanna Eastburn
chipped in with three blocks a piece.
Tonight the athletic department honored
Misty Jenkin and Rhianna Stafford with plaques and
certificated as departing seniors, and with her retirement
announcement earlier in the week, junior Jamie Russell was also
honored by EOU and the volleyball team for her contributions to the
2003 season.
