LA GRANDE - Missing starter Misty
Jenkin (foot), back-up middle Jamie Russell (illness), and
libero Megan Shimamoto (illness), the Mountaineers gave
visiting Concordia all they could handle, but eventually fell to the
Cavaliers, 3-1 (14-30, 22-30, 30-27, 30-25) tonight at Quinn Coliseum.
Eastern fell behind the Cavs two games
to love, but with Concordia leading 23-21 in what could have been the
third and final game, the Mountaineers put together one of the best
game-finishing rallies of the season.
Jana Brotherton recorded three
blocks, including two solo jobs, along with an assist from Jessie
Morris that sparked the comeback. After a setting error by
EOU's Melissa Helmer sent the ball into the service of
Concordia at 24-24, Brotherton emphatically put away a loose Cavalier
ball at the net to give Eastern the lead at 25-24 that they would
never relinquish.
Kill by Olivia Graff, Kaki
McLean, and Morris, an ace by Tara Daly, and a hitting
error by the Cavaliers would give Eastern game three and break a
string of 11 straight game losses.
Game four carried the intensity of game
three on the Eastern Oregon side of the court, but the Cavaliers
stepped up their efforts and stopped Mountaineer rallies late to end
the match and prevent a game five.
The lack of Jenkin and Russell meant
more swings for for the rest of the Mountaineers.
Kaki McLean took a match-high 54
attempts that led to a team-high 16 kills and a .204 swing percentage.
Brotherton almost had the rarest of all volleyball
double-doubles. She ended the night as the only other
Mountaineer in double-figure kills (11) and chipped in eight blocks (2
solo).
Eastern as a team took a season-high
183 attack attack attempts and tied the high for dig with 73.
The Cavs were led by the 19 kills and
20 digs of Amanda Larsen. Amy Nevills also had 16 kills and 15
digs.
Eastern will host Western Baptist
College tomorrow at 7 PM. The Warriors were swept by the red-hot
Albertson College Coyotes in Caldwell this evening, 3-0.
