LA GRANDE - The Mountaineer's came out
sluggish and stayed sluggish, as EOU lost a tough four-game match to
the visiting Evergreen State College Geoducks, 3-1.
"We were not aggressive
tonight," said a dejected coach Ryan Platt.
Game one was an exciting one as the
Mountaineers found themselves leading by eight points at 10-2 and led
throughout until Evergreen caught up at 30-30, but kills by the
Geoducks Hanna Plunk and Stephanie Short ended the game.
The Eastern Oregon team showed their
metal as they came back to win game two 30-23.
Down most of the game, Eastern Oregon
rallied to tie the game at 19-19 and then took control scoring six
straight points to take a 25-19 lead with junior Tara Daly serving.
Game three felt a lot like game one,
but it was Evergreen that jumped out on top to lead by as much as five
at several points. Eastern managed to scrap back to tie the game
at 13-13 and then took a short-lived lead by three at 20-17. The
Geoducks then fought back to take the lead for good at 23-22,
finishing out winning 8 of the next 10 point for the 30-25 victory.
Game four was all Evergreen. The
Geoducks stepped out and took a commanding 9-2 lead in which the
Mountaineer tried to cut into, but never could get any closer than
six, eventually losing the game 30-18, and the match three games to
one.
Eastern was again led by Kaki McLean
with 11 kills and 11 digs. Jana Brotherton was the only other
Mountaineer with double-digit kills with a team-high 12.
Brotherton also led the team with three blocks.
Kristen Bartley and Stephanie Short led
the Geoducks in kills with 17 and 13, respectively. Short also
ended the night with 24 digs.
Eastern will return to action next
weekend when they travel to Portland to face Cascade and Warner
Pacific. Both matches are slated for a 7 PM start.
