Mountaineer go five before falling to eagles

September 26, 2003

Box Score

LA GRANDE - For a place in which they had not won since 2000, the Northwest College Eagle felt pretty lucky to escape from La Grande with a hard-fought, five-game victory over a much improved Eastern Oregon University Mountaineer squad; 30-27, 28-30, 26-30, 30-21, 15-13.

Eastern led the match two games to one after three, but hitting errors led Northwest back into the match winning the fourth to even the match and go into a fifth and final game.

In game five, Northwest jumped out to a 5-2 led, but the Mountaineers fought back to even the score at 8-8 and 13-13, but a kill by the Eagle's Emily Marquez and a fortunate hit that went astray by EOU's Kaki McLean ended Eastern's upset hopes.

McLean and Jana Brotherton ended up with 13 kills apiece for the Mountaineers, while McLean and and Misty Jenkin were topin digs with 12 and 11, respectively.

The Mountaineers ended the night with 11 team blocks; led by five apiece from Brotherton and Jamie Russell.

The Eagles' Marquez led everyone with a match-high 17 kills, a .394 hitting percentage and five blocks.

Both teams combined to commit 37 serving errors in the match that lasted 2 hours and 14 minutes in front of 220 at Quinn Coliseum.

Eastern will return to the hardwood, when the entertain the Geoducks of Evergreen State College tomorrow at 7 pm.
