teams advance to CCC playoffs |

After some tweaking of
the lineup and motivated play that led to positive changes, the
Eastern Oregon University Mountaineer volleyball team will return home
this weekend in hopes of breaking an eight-match losing streak against
teams from the Puget Sound area.
"I think some of
the changes that we implemented on Friday night have worked out
nicely," stated head coach Ryan Platt. "We saw some
immediate changes for the better and they carried over to Saturday
night's match against Concordia."
Those changes by the
Mountaineer coaching staff snapped a 21-game losing streak in the
second game against defending Cascade Collegiate Conference champion
Concordia. Eastern Oregon defeated the Cavaliers 30-26 in game
two, but lost closely contested games three and four to lose the
match, 3-1.
The Mountaineers will
host CCC surprise Northwest College (7-5, 4-1), on Friday night and
The Evergreen State College on Saturday night.
Northwest, who was
picked sixth in this year's conference pre-season poll, surprised
everyone when they snapped Concordia's 66-conference match in their
first conference match of the season at the Cavalier Dome.
The Lady Eagles have
not won in La Grande since 2000.
Leading the Lady
Eagles are sophomores Jessie Buck and Lisa Langmade. Last week,
Buck was selected as CCC and NAIA Region I Setter of the Week and
Langmade was honored as CCC and NAIA Region I Player of the Week.
Buck is second in the
Cascade Conference in setting with 11.38 assists per game played.
Langmade is currently sitting in third just ahead of teammate Kelly
Clarke at 3.92 kills per game.
On Saturday, the
Mountaineers will welcome the Geoducks (sounds like Goo-wie ducks) of
The Evergreen State College (5-5, 3-2). The Geoducks currently
reside in the sixth and final playoff spot for the CCC tournament that
will be hosted by the regular-season winner.
Kristen Bartley is the
main spark for Evergreen. The sophomore swinger sits in fifth
position in the CCC table for kills per game with 3.84.
Last season the two
teams split the season series; each winning on the other's home court.
Game time for each
match will be 7 PM.
