The Mountaineer
volleyball team, in desperate need of a win, will travel west to the
Willamette Valley to face Western Baptist and Concordia this weekend.
"We are really
looking forward to these challenging opponents, especially with how
hard the players have been practicing," said Mountaineer head
coach Ryan Platt. "They have been doing great this week."
Going into this
weekend, Eastern has dropped their last six contests since a 3-0
victory over the University of Victoria.
On Friday night, the
Mountaineers face a tough Western Baptist squad, that is 7-4 overall
and 3-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
The Lady Warriors are
led by NAIA Honorable Mention All-American outside hitter Liz Howe
(6-0, Brooks, Ore.).
In her 42 games
played, Howe leads the Warriors in total kills (172), kills per game
(4.1), total digs (153) and digs per game (3.64).
Western Baptist was
picked 3rd by the coaches in this year's pre-season conference poll.
The match in Salem
against Western Baptist is schedule for a 7 PM start.
Life will not get any
easier for coach Platt and his Mountaineer team as the travel up I-5
and I-205 to northeast Portland to face perennial regional powerhouse
Concordia University.
It's a somewhat
different year for the Lady Cavaliers as they have had to endure a
rough start to the 2003 season, losing seven of their first eight
match. But the Lady Cavs have won two straight conference
matches to keep them in the hunt for another CCC title.
Those seven losses
included a loss to Northwest College in Portland to start the 2003
conference season. With that loss, Concordia snapped an
incredible 66 conference match win streak... a streak that may never
be equaled.
Top players for the
Cavs are Melissa Rowe (5-10, Longview, Wash.) and Amanda Larsen (5-9,
North Bend, Ore.). The duo lead the Cavs in kills with 82 and
88, respectively.
Krista Eckberg (6-1,
Vancouver Wash.) is Concordia's best defensive front with 19 blocks on
the young season.
Eastern Oregon and
Concordia will match up at 7 Pm on Saturday before the long return
home east on I-84.
