LA GRANDE - It would seem home opening
night jitters were in the air as the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers (1-8,
0-1 CCC) committed too many miscue to contain a red-hot Oregon Tech
(8-2, 3-0 CCC) squad, dropping in three games, 16-30, 24-30, 19-30.
The Mountaineers committed nine service
errors, nine serve reception errors, and five blocking error in the
loss. Combine those mistakes with 47 kills from a strong Oregon Tech
team and that spelled disaster for the home team in their home opener
for the 2003 season.
Kaki McLean (5-10, Jr., OH,
Paulina, Ore.), Eastern's lone All-Conference representative from
2002, led the team with 9 kills and 12 digs and a solo block.
Union High School's Jana Brotherton
(5-10, Fr., MB, Union, Ore.), who was playing in front of some of her
former teammates this evening, ended the evening with 5 kills, a solo
block and a block assist.
For the Owls, Cristina Merrill and
Marcie Mitzner each had 15 and 10 kills, respectively.
Defensively, eight of the 12 Oregon Tech players that saw playing time
had at least three digs. Merrill led all Owls with seven digs.
Jennifer Cueto chipped in with three
total blocks, including one solo.
The Mountaineers will have to regroup
in a hurry as they will entertain the 12th-ranked Raiders of Southern
Oregon tomorrow night at 7 PM at Quinn Coliseum.
The Owls will travel to Caldwell, Idaho
to face Albertson College at 7 PM MT.
