LA GRANDE - After a week of intense pre-season training, second-year head coach Ryan Platt already sees a change in the team from one year ago.

Last year's team ended up 6-17 overall and 4-14 in the Cascade Conference play.

"I'm excited about the upcoming season," said Platt.  "We have a great mixture of returning players plus some new people that will definitely come in a make a big impact...right away.  I will be very surprised and disappointed if we don't exceed last year's performance."

Platt went on to say, "Our pre-conference schedule is better than last season's.  Our alumni game Saturday and the tournaments at Lewis-Clark State and Willamette the following weekends will definitely give us the caliber of opponents to get us ready for the Cascade Conference season."

Returning from last season's squad will be All-Conference and Honorable Mention All-Region I outside hitter Kaki McLean.  McLean, a 5-foot-10 junior from Paulina, Ore., led the Mountaineers last season in kills (263), kills per game (3.13), digs (293), and digs per game (3.49).

Also back is defensive specialist Emily Lee.  Lee, a junior from Aloha, Ore., has been a integral part of the Mountaineer team her past two season off the bench with her energy and leadership.

Transferring in this season are Jamie Russell and Denee Newton.  Russell, a 6-foot-1 outside hitter from Grangeville, Idaho, came to Eastern from Albertson College.  Jamie redshirted as a freshman in 2001 for Coach Mendiola's Coyotes and played in just 18 of the 'Yotes 31 matches in 2002.

Newton comes to La Grande after two seasons at Western Baptist College.  Newton transfer to play alongside from Crook County High School teammate McLean.

In her two seasons at Western Baptist, Newton played in all but one match for Coach Tracy Collins.  In exactly 200 games, Newton has averaged 1.8 digs and almost 0.5 aces.

Also coming to La Grande after two years of service at Tacoma Community College will be Sarelle Parrish.  Parrish is a 5-foot-9 setter from Garfield, Wash. on the 'ol Palouse.

Pride and a little revenge will be on the minds of the Mountaineers as the Alumni team visits Quinn Coliseum Saturday night at 7 PM.

Last season, the "present day" squandered a 2-0 lead to eventually fall to the Alumni, 26-30, 26-30, 30-23, 30-25, 15-6.  The following week, the Mountaineers will begin the season in earnest at the Lewis-Clark State College Tournament in Lewiston, Idaho.
