Eastern Drops two to
Owls; Falls to
fourth May

Game 1 - Oregon Tech 7, Eastern Oregon 2
Game 2 - Oregon Tech 4, Eastern Oregon 3
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - Today, the Eastern Oregon softball team
dropped a pair of Cascade Collegiate Conference contests to Oregon
Tech, 7-2 and 4-3. The losses have momentarily dropped the
Mountaineers from second into a tie with Western Baptist for the
third, but percentage points back of the Warriors for that third and
final playoff spot to the NAIA Region I playoffs.
Oregon Tech got things started right off
the bat as they touched up EOU starter Shannon Rasmussen for single
runs in the first and second. Rasmussen was then relieved by
Jayne-Leigh Thomas who could not stop the Owls as they tabbed her
for two more runs in just two-thirds of an inning. Rasmussen
then came back to the pitcher's circle to get the final out of the
third inning and finish the rest of the game.
Eastern got on the scoreboard in the top
of the second with two runs on Sierra Russell's first round-tripper
of the season. After the Owls two runs in third, OIT led by a
score of 4-2. Each team was
held scoreless until OIT's sixth inning when they scored three more
for the final margin of 7-2.
Thomas (5-7) took the loss for the Mountaineers in just her
two-thirds of work in the third inning. Nicki Schultz,
Adrienne Fullmer, Beth Hull and Rasmussen each had two hits in the
contest. Russell's homer was Eastern's only extra base hit of
the game. Game two would become
a pitchers dual as Eastern starter Kalli McGilley gave up a solo
homer to OIT's Amanda Doherty in the first and that would be the
only tally of the game. Oregon Tech's Kelly Palmateer shutout
the Mountaineers on just four hits for the win. McGilley took
the loss and dropped her record to 3-3.
McGilley's day came to an end after that
first inning, giving up a double and a single after the Doherty
homer, only getting out of the inning on a base running snafu by the
Owls on the single. Jayne-Leigh
Thomas came in relief of McGilley and shut down the Owls, allowing
just four hits, but walking five and striking out one. Shannon
Rasmussen, Casi Reisenauer, Adrienne Fullmer, and Nicki Schultz each
tallied singles for all of the Mountaineer offense.
The Mountaineers must right the ship
next weekend against Albertson and hope for help from Concordia,
Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon against Western Baptist this week in
order to secure a post-season berth.
Eastern Oregon and Albertson will face
off on Saturday beginning at 1 pm. |
