RICHLAND, Wash. - The Eastern
Oregon softball team wrapped up their five-game stint at Royal Inn
Central Washington University softball tournament by splitting
Saturday's doubleheader and shutting out Albertson, 5-0 on Sunday.
For the weekend, the Mountaineers
went two-up and three-down to push their overall record to 4-3.
In the first game on Saturday, Beth
Hull smacked a three-run homer in the sixth to break a 1-1 tie for
the 4-1 victory over Northwest Nazarene.
Hull's homer, her first of the
season, was one of two hits in the game for Eastern.
Shannon Rasmussen (W, 2-0) pitched six
strong innings, allowing just one run and seven hits.
Jayne-Leigh Thomas threw a 1-2-3 seventh inning for her first save
of the season.
In Saturday's nightcap the
Mountaineers tried to make a comeback against Utah Valley State
College, but four errors in the game proved costly in a 11-8 loss.
The Wolverines, who are playing in
their first year as a four-year institution at the NCAA I level,
scored three runs in the top of seventh to break an 8-8 tie.
Only two of Utah Valley's last five runs were earned.
Eastern tied the game at 8-8 with a
five-run sixth, led by a 2-run single by Beth Hull and a
bases-clearing double by Adrienne Fullmer.
Casi Reisenauer collected three hits
in four at-bats for Eastern. Hull, Fullmer, and Shannon
Rasmussen each had two hits in the contest.
Jayne-Leigh Thomas pitched 3 2/3
innings in a no decision, giving up six runs on six hits.
Thomas was relieved by Lisa Fox, making her second appearance of the
season. Fox went two and a third,
giving up two runs on five hits. Rasmussen (L, 2-1) pitched
the seventh and took the loss on what would be a game-winning
three-run homer
by Utah Valley State's Amanda Kendzior.
On Sunday, the Mountaineers took out
some of their aggravation for the previous day's loss on Albertson College,
as Kalli McGilley and Jayne-Leigh Thomas combined on a 5-0 shutout,
in the final game of the tournament for Eastern Oregon.
McGilley (W, 1-1) took the circle for
five innings allowing just two hits, striking out three and walking
just one. Thomas allowed just one hit over the
final two innings to earn her second save of the season.
The Mountaineers banged out 14 hits
against Albertson starter Kerri Russell.
Of the 14 EOU hits, only two were of the extra base variety.
Heather Tandberg and Casi Reisenauer
each had three hits in the game. Nicole Landstrom had two hits and
two RBI, while Nikki Schultz also had two hits and a run batted in.
After seven games, Reisenauer and Rasmussen are leading
the Mountaineers in hitting with .458 and .400 batting averages,
respectively.
Rasmussen (2-1) is also leading the
pitching staff with an ERA of 1.00 in 14 innings of work.
Eastern Oregon will take the next two
weeks off before traveling to Tucson, Ariz. for a three-day,
five-game tournament March 21-24. They will then return, take
a day off then participate in the Cascade Collegiate Conference
tip-off tournament in Caldwell, March 26-27.
