After only a couple of
days of outside practice, why not take on the nation's #1 team, two
conference opponents, an NCAA II team, and a junior college team that
has jumped to NCAA I?
That's what's upcoming
for head coach Anji Weissenfluh and her Mountaineer softball team at
the Royal Inn Central Washington University Tournament this weekend in
Richland, Wash.
All games in the
annual event will be
played at Columbia Playfields in downtown Richland next to Richland
High School.
On Friday, EOU will
take on the NAIA's #1 ranked team in Simon Fraser University.
last season, the Mountaineer lost in all three meeting against the
Clan, including 10-0 in this very same tournament.
Southern Oregon will
be Eastern Oregon opponent later in the day. Eastern will try to
break a string of six-consecutive losses to the Raiders and losses in
9 of their last 10 meetings.
Saturday begins with
Northwest Nazarene, who the Mountaineers defeated 8-1 and 4-0 in Nampa
this past weekend. Eastern Oregon banged out 20 hits in the
doubleheader against the Crusaders, including 6 extra base hits.
The final game on
Saturday will be against Utah Valley State College. Utah Valley
State is playing their first season as an NCAA I independent and this
will be the first-ever meeting between the two squads.
The Mountaineers will
finish up the tournament on Sunday morning with a single game against
Albertson at 10:45 am. Eastern has defeated the 'Yotes in nine
of their ten meetings since Albertson resurrected their program in
2002.
This will be the final
action for the Mountaineer women softball team until the team heads
south for Spring Break to participate in the Tucson Invitational,
March 21-24. Eastern will then travel to Caldwell to play in the
annual CCC Pre-Season tournament, in which all games count toward
conference standings.
