teams advance to Region I playoffs |
|
|
| After
27 games of NAIA Region I play, the 2004 season has some down to
one simple task for the EOU Mountaineers: Sweep OIT in three games
and go to the playoffs.
Eastern Oregon did not do itself
any favors last week as they dropped five games to Albertson (0-2)
and the University of British Columbia (0-3)... all at the
friendly confines of Snowflake Field. In fact the
Mountaineers have dropped their last six and eight of their last
ten ballgames.
In order to make their way to the
first post-season appearance in baseball since 1996, Eastern must
hit the ball and field the ball better than they did last
week. EOU batted an anemic .181 against 'Yote and
Thunderbird pitchers and their conference-leading defense let them
down, committing nine errors in the five games.
Five Mountaineers will play their
final home games of the season this weekend for head coach Wes
McAllaster. Josh Adams of Arlington, Wash., Dan Curfew of
Bend, Ore., Jesse Longoria of Lewisville, Tex., Tony Martinez of
Winnemucca, Nev., and Scotty Tondevold or Orofino, Idaho, will all
finish their collegiate baseball careers this weekend.
The Eastern Oregon/Oregon Tech
three-game series will begin Saturday with a doubleheader
beginning at 1:00 pm at Snowflake Field and then conclude Sunday
with a single game at noon. |

Last week, the EOU
softball team was looking to sweep Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon
to get into contention for a conference title, now after a 1-3
weekend in the Siskiyou Mountains, the Mountaineers must sweep
Albertson in their final doubleheader of the season and hope for
help from Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon.
There is the possibility that Eastern
could sweep and still be left out in the cold. If Western
Baptist or Concordia takes two of its four games against Oregon Tech
and Southern Oregon, combined with a winless Saturday for EOU, Eastern will not
make the post season since the 1997 season when Eastern ended that
campaign 17-24. Only the Mountaineers control their own
destiny.
Three Mountaineers
will be playing their final home games at EOU's softball field this
Saturday. Andrienne Fullmer, Casi Reisenauer, and Jayne-Leigh
Thomas will all finish up their fine careers this weekend.
Thomas and Fuller are both four-year student-athletes for the
Mountaineers, while Reisenauer has played two seasons after
transferring from Big Bend Community College.

| The
Mountaineer rodeo teams will look to rebound from last weekend's
disappointing performance at the NIRA Northwest Regional Rodeo #3 in
Milton-Freewater.
The men's and women's teams both scored just
10 points, but did not lose much ground to the University of Idaho
for possible fourth place regional finishes for the 2003-04 season.
Scoring the points for Eastern was Andrew
Endicott (So., Marsing, Idaho) with a 5th place finish in the Team
Roping event. Endicott scored a time of 29.1 seconds with
partner Zach Chadwick of Treasure Valley Community College. On
the women's side, Amber Aichele (Sr., Baker City, Ore.) finished
sixth in the Breakaway Roping with a time of 10.5 seconds in her two
runs. Lacy Mespelt of Blue Mountain Community College won the
event with a time of 7.3 seconds.
The two teams will try to come up big this
weekend as they travel to Lewiston, Idaho for a double rodeo.
The fourth NIRA Northwest Regionally sponsored one-day rodeo will take
place on Friday at the Lucky Acers Arena. Then on Saturday and
Sunday, the teams will participate in a two-day rodeo hosted by the
University of Idaho, also in Lewiston. The
2003-04 Northwest rodeo series will wrap up next weekend at the Blue
Mountain Community College rodeo in Pendleton. |
