Minutes
April 6, 2004
1. Meeting called to Order
a. Chair Nancy Knowles asked Assembly members to sign a check in sheet to enable an accurate count of members at Assembly for quorum purposes. A discussion was held regarding the quorum issue.
b. It was announced April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. There will be a rally held on April 19th at 2:00 p.m.; more information will be available later. A book discussion on the book Lucky, will be held on April 28, 2004. The book is available from Dala Ramsey, or may be purchased from the Bookstore.
c. The minutes of the March 2, 2004 assembly were approved as posted to the Assembly website.
2. President's Update
a. Acknowledgments - President Lund acknowledged the women's basketball team, introducing them to the Assembly. The team received a standing ovation from Assembly members. The team's average grade point average for winter was 3.21. Dr. Lund also acknowledged Ted Atkinson and the SIFE club, who earned Honorable Mention at the regional competition in Seattle. They were the first runner up in their division.
b. Distinguished Teaching Faculty Nominations - The Distinguished Teaching Faculty Nominations are being processed. The nomination form can be submitted online. The deadline for nominations is May 17, 2004.
c. Sexual Assault Awareness month - Dr. Lund recommended reading the book that is the subject of the book discussion. The name of the book is Lucky . It can be purchased from Dala or at the Bookstore. Dr. Lund believes reading of the book can heighten awareness of sexual assault issues .
d. Enrollment - As of this week, fall applications are up about 22.4% from last fall. We are remaining cautiously optimistic regarding enrollment .
e. Dean of Arts and Science leaving - Anne Patterson has accepted the Provost position at Fairmont University. Dr. Lund wished her luck in her new position.
f. 75th Anniversary Celebration - All students, faculty and staff interested in helping with the 75th Anniversary celebration can meet Thursday in Ackerman 105 at 3:30.
g. Budget - Dr. Lund gave an overview of the budget situation, with timelines for notification of budget reductions. (See Current Topics page)
3. Provost's Update
a. Provost Miller will visit each school in the next few weeks. He will update the schools then.
4. Action Items
a. Move EPCC to consent agenda - We will wait for EPCC Committee input regarding this issue before taking action.
b. EPCC Action - Motions were made and seconded to approve EPCC actions. (See Current Topics page - EPCC items). Motions passed.
c. New Bachelor of Music Degree - An explanation of the new Bachelor of Music Degree was given (See Current Topics page- EPCC items). After discussion, a motion was made to approve. Motion was seconded and passed.
d. Student Affairs Committee change - The Student Affairs Assembly Constitution change was explained and discussed. The issue will be revisited at the next assembly. (See Current Topics page)
e. Students on SPC Committee - This issue tabled until next Assembly.
f. Educational Roles - Rob Davis led a discussion regarding developing educational roles. Questions were raised about where these would be published and why they were needed.
5. Five Minute Access
a. Athletics Update - Rob Cashell updated the Assembly on Jim Fenwick's condition and informed them of the blood drive being held Wednesday from noon to 3:00. Winter post-season awards were announced. Tricia Haddock received 1st team All Cascade Conference and 3rd team NAIA All American Women's Basketball. Jamie Jo Cant received 1st team All Conference and NAIA Scholar Athlete. Sarah Smith received NAIA Scholar Athlete. Trevor Eckstein received 1st team All Conference and NAIA Honorable Mention. Anji Weissenfluh received Cascade College Conference Coach of the Year. Jessie Longoria of the baseball team received NAIA Region 1 player of the week. Four members of the Track and Field team qualified for Nationals; Kelsey Jones, Eric Griffiths, Tim Riley, and Brian Crowl. Rodeo teams are back, both teams are currently fifth in the region.
b. Faculty Athletic Representative - Jeff Dense reported that the average female student GPA was 3.19. All of the women's teams had a GPA of at least 3.0. The soccer team's average GPA was 3.27. 35% of the female athletes were on the Dean's list. This indicates that students are finding a balance between athletics and academics.
c. Spring Symposium - Kathleen Dahl said abstracts for Spring Symposium are due electronically by April 16, 2004. They are to be submitted electronically to Kathleen. She will be contacting people to help in recruiting, chairing committees and other jobs at the Symposium.
d. Math Team Acknowledgment - David Allen introduced the members of the Mathematical Contest in Modeling team, Michael Lindsay, and Yosuke Yamamato. John Schumacher, the third member of the team, has graduated and was not able to attend. At the four-day competition, the team earned Honorable Mention, which only 27 teams of 600 received. The team received a standing ovation from Assembly members.
e. Student Affairs - Sheldon Nord will schedule forums on several issues in Student Affairs. The forums will be held April 13th and April 27th from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Hoke main lounge.
