Intent and Rationale of Change
EOU, as a selective liberal arts university, provides students with the ability to improve their academic standing over the summer sessions, while also adhering to academic standards that promote student success and academic progress.
The following policy addresses the issue of summer session academic standing. The ASC proposes this policy with the following caveats.
The current summer session structure is not appropriate for students in academic peril (Probation/Suspension) to improve their standing. Abbreviated sessions present additional academic challenges to students rather than academic opportunities. The ASC suggests that EOU consider 5 or 10 week summer sessions.
The ASC has constructed this policy with consideration of limited institutional resources available during the summer. Holding academic hearings and interventions over the summer are not viable options at this time. We propose only one additional commitment of resources, that is one academic intervention session during the third week of June (between the end of spring and the beginning of the first summer session).
Non-admitted students taking EOU courses, either over the summer or during the academic year, are not subject to the academic standards set by this committee.
Proposed Change in Policy/Text of Current Policy (new text underlined)
under Academic Standards:
Academic Suspension: Students who have an EOU term GPA below 2.000 while on academic probation will be placed on Academic Suspension. Suspended (and, hence, former) students are denied all student privileges including, but not limited to: registration, class attendance, financial aid and residence in EOU housing. Students who petition for reinstatement should attend classes until their case is resolved with the Academic Standards Committee. There are exceptions for Summer Session registration, see Summer Session, Academic Standards Procedures.
under Academic Standards, Procedures:
Academic
Suspension
Students on Academic Suspension for the first time will be notified by letter
and may petition the ASC for possible reinstatement. There are exceptions
for Summer Session registration, see Summer Session, Academic Standards Procedures.
In the meantime, students are strongly encouraged to attend
classes for which they are registered. Petitions for reinstatement must be typewritten
and include (at a minimum) information about the causes of poor academic performance
and information about possible remedies.
(additional policy)
Summer Session Academic Procedures
Academic standing requirements are waived to register for summer courses, except:
Students on Probation MUST participate in an academic intervention (third week in June) before registering for summer courses in either summer session (academic hold on payment).
Student academic standing at the end of either summer session can result in the following actions:
Students entering a summer session on Suspension will NOT be given a chance to appeal to ASC for Fall reinstatement if their overall Summer GPA is below a 2.000.
Students entering a summer session on Probation MUST petition the ASC for Fall reinstatement if their academic standing moves to Suspension as a result of summer coursework.
Students who improve their academic standing to Good Standing during a summer session will NOT be required to appeal to the ASC for Fall reinstatement . removed text @letter notification
Explanation of Policy
Example Scenario A:
Student A's spring term grades move Student A to Suspension. Student A intends to take summer courses but won't have the opportunity to petition the ASC until fall. A contact is made (letter or e-mail) that communicates Student A's ability to enroll in summer courses but an overall Summer GPA of less than 2.0 would result in a second consecutive suspension. Student A would not be able to petition the committee in the fall. Student A is encouraged to proceed carefully and work with an academic adviser to plan out Student A's summer course load.
Possible outcomes:
a) If Student A chooses not to take summer courses Student A will need to petition the ASC during fall meetings.
b) Student A has an overall Summer GPA of 2.9 . This is enough to bring up Student A's EOU cumulative to 2. 1 and Student A is moved from Suspension to Good Standing . The ASC does not see Student A in the fall.
c) Student A withdraws or gets 'Is' during summer session. Student A must petition the ASC in the fall.
d)
Student A gets a 1.8. Student A receives the letter stating suspension, no appeal.
Sit out one year or take 24 graded credits, etc. according to current AS policy.
Example Scenario B:
Student B ends spring term on Probation. Intending on taking summer courses Student B is directed to a June intervention where it is made clear that an overall Summer GPA of less than 2.0 will put Student B on Suspension.
Possible outcomes:
a) Student B gets an overall Summer GPA of 1.9 and now needs to petition the ASC fall term.
b) Student B's overall Summer GPA is 2.0 but Student B's cumulative remains below 2.0. Student B receives the continued probation (P4) letter.
c)
Student B's overall Summer GPA is enough to move cumulative to 2.2 and Good
Standing.
