AND IN-PROGRESS COURSEWORK
The I grade is assigned by the instructor if the quality
of work is satisfactory, but students have been prevented by circumstances beyond
their control from completing all of the requirements of the course. It is the
instructor's prerogative to judge the validity of these circumstances. The instructor
determines the steps the student must take to remove the deficiency, the time
allowed for doing so, and the alternate grade (usually F) to be assigned if
they fail to complete the work in the time allowed. The student and the Registrar's
Office are informed of the instructor's requirements in writing. Incomplete
grades not removed by the date specified (limited to one term unless otherwise
noted) automatically revert to the alternate grade specified by the instructor.
The grade of X is assigned when a student is enrolled in a course which extends beyond the end of the term. Ordinarily, courses of this nature will be so described in the programs catalog. In the case of thesis, practicum and similar credit, however, the possibility of extension of the course over more than one term is understood and need not be specified.

• Instructors will be allowed to submit an I grade along with a default grade of F using Webster. All incompletes submitted on Webster will automatically revert to the default grade of F at the end of the following term provided the instructor has not already submitted a different grade. Instructors who desire a deadline other than the default of 1 term, or a grade other than F to replace the I at the end of one more term, may fill out an “Incomplete Form” at the Registrar's Office.
• The X grade will only be an option on Webster for designated courses.
• X's and I's are currently used inconsistently by instructors at EOU. Faculty complain that too much paperwork is involved for I's. Assigning an X is preferred because it can be submitted online on Webster with no required paperwork.
• While most schools allow faculty to assign an I and recognize the meaning of an I, the X grade is not a universally used or recognized grade in higher education. Furthermore, the X grade holds inconsistent meaning at universities ranging from a notation for academic dishonesty or missing a final exam to indication of an unofficial withdrawal from class.
• Because I's have a definitive deadline, this increases accountability for instructors and students. This philosophy is consistent with policy a “selective undergraduate university” should maintain.
• The X grade was intended for classes that extend beyond one term, which included many traditional distance education classes. However, the recent changes in requirements based on financial aid coupled with administrative difficulties resolving X grades, the Department of Distance Education administrators now prefer that instructors assign I's instead of X's.
