REPEATED COURSEWORK
Students may repeat a course to improve a grade or to increase mastery of a subject for the purpose of improving a grade and increased mastery of the subject, although the credit hours and grade points earned for that course count only once. The highest most recent grade earned will be used in computing the GPA and credit toward graduation. Grades of U and W are not used to replace A – F grades to be higher grades than D or F. All grades will remain on the transcript. Students are responsible for notifying the Registrar's Office that a course is being repeated so that their GPA can be recalculated and their credit hour total reduced.
The following rationales were considered.
1) The most recent grade is a better measure of a student’s competency.
2) The most recent grade will provide incentive for the student to achieve a better grade.
3) This policy will deter potential repeat coursework abuse.
4) All other OUS institutions were researched, and this policy coincides with their policies (see attached document below).
5) The committee chose not to include wording regarding “recognized repeatable courses”. Distinguishing between enrolling in a repeatable course and repeating a course and including such language confuses the two and could preclude a student from legitimately repeating a course.

SOUTHERN OREGON UNIVERSITY
From 2005/06 Catalog
Students who fail to perform satisfactory work are required to repeat the course if credit is desired. When a course is repeated, the most recent grade is used for computing the cumulative GPA, regardless of earlier grades.
WESTERN OREGON UNIVERSITY
From 2005/06 Catalog
Repeated course work. Students may repeat a course. Only the most recent grade will be computed in the GPA regardless of earlier grades. The student must request adjustment of grade-point averages on a form available in the Registrar’s Office. Courses taken on an audit or pass-no credit basis may not be repeated.
OREGON INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
From 2005/06 Catalog
The following restrictions apply for course-repeat situations:
1. Students may attempt the same course (for a “W” or a letter grade) a total of four times.
2. Each withdrawal (“W”) is considered an attempt. Withdrawals, however, are not included in GPA calculations.
3. The new grade earned will replace the previous grade(s) when computing GPA. Only the first two earned grades will be excluded for GPA calculations. The last grade earned will be used on the petition to graduate.
4. All grades and credits remain on the student’s official transcript.
NOTE: Students should consult with their financial-aid counselor to determine financial eligibility for repeat courses.
PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY
From 2005/06 Catalog
GPA repeat policy. This policy only applies to undergraduate duplicate courses. Credit and GPA are retained on the first A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, and all grades in subsequent attempts count in GPA. The first PSU grade of D or F may be forgiven if repeated at PSU for a differentiated grade (no P/NP). In this case, credit is retained on the last grade received. Both grades are retained on the transcript. If repeated more than once, each subsequent grade will be retained on the transcript and counted in the GPA.
OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY
From 2005/06 Catalog
Courses may be repeated once for grade replacement. Both grades will appear on the academic record, but only the second grade will be counted in the cumulative grade point average and toward graduation requirements. Courses taken more than two times will appear on the academic record but not count in the cumulative grade point average. Regardless of the number of times a course is repeated, credits earned will be counted only once for graduation requirements. Recognized repeatable courses, such as activity courses, research, seminars, and selected topics, do not come under this restriction. A student receiving an A-F grade can only replace such a grade in the GPA calculation with another A-F grade (not with an S/U grade.)
UNIVERSITY OF OREGON
From 2005/06 Catalog
Courses cannot be repeated for credit unless designated as repeatable (R) by the University Committee on Courses. Credit for duplicated courses is deducted, but grades for these courses are included in the GPA.
