Dean Marilyn A. Levine
A Biographical Introduction
Dean Levine was trained as a historian of Asia (China and Southeast Asia), with graduate degrees from the University of Chicago and the University of Hawaii. She has published two books, over four dozen articles, and created a dozen Web sites for research, teaching, professional, and community service. She has obtained and administered more than three dozen grants to fund research, teaching, and community projects. She received almost two dozen awards and honors, including three awards for teaching excellence. Dean Levine has delivered over 120 presentations, workshops and public speeches, and organized two international conferences. Several of her works have been translated into French and Chinese. Her international reputation resulted in invitations to conduct joint projects and make presentations in the PRC, Taiwan, Hong Kong, France, Germany, Italy, and Australia. In 2004 she was invited by the University of Pittsburgh to participate on the Semester at Sea during the Summer. In 2006 she was a Study Tour leader to China for the National Consortium for Teaching About Asia.
Dean Levine has served on numerous boards of directors including the Idaho Humanities Council. She served as chair of the Council of Conferences for the Association for Asian Studies and executive secretary of the Western Conference of the Association for Asian Studies. From 2003 to 2004 Levine served as co-president of the Women in Higher Education Roundtable. In 2004, she served as President of H-NET, (Humanities and Social Sciences Online) the world’s largest society of teachers and scholars dedicated to utilizing the educational potential of the Internet.
Dean Levine’s research interests have been in the areas of Chinese political party formation in Europe and exploring new approaches to the field of life history. She published The Found Generation: Chinese Communists in Europe during the Twenties (University of Washington Press, 1993) and with Chen San-ching, The Chinese Guomindang in Europe: A Sourcebook of Documents (University of California Press, 2003). Levine’s online Chinese Biographical Database project was the first online, scholarly moderated database on the Worldwide Web.
From 2000 until 2005, Dr. Levine was Chair of the Division of Social Sciences at Lewis-Clark State College, and she moved to Eastern Oregon University in 2005 to serve as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
