I am an exchange student from the “Pädagogische Hochschule Ludwigsburg” in Germany for the academic year 2004/2005. I enjoy studying at EOU a lot and especially the art classes and professors are great. In the printmaking and painting classes I got to learn so much more than I had learned in Germany during my first two years of college.

In my artwork I am concentrating on the experiences I have had so far, living in the United States. A lot of things are different from Germany and almost every day I find myself surprised, wondering or happy about the things I see around me.

In some of my works, as in the painting “American Breakfast” and in the woodcut “American Dinner” I am playing on the stereotypical picture about Americans. I know that not all American people eat cheeseburgers every day, but compared to Germans they eat fast food quite a bit. There are also many more restaurants and coffee chains to be found in the US. That’s probably because Americans tend to eat out more often than Europeans.

With the polyester plate lithograph “America Divided” I intend to show the two opposing sides within the American people concerning politics and the current war in Iraq. A lot of Europeans believe that all Americans think the same way. They see Bush and therefore have the opinion that the whole United States stand united behind Bush’s opinion and actions. However, I experienced a different America. A lot of people I got to know are against the war and don’t agree with US foreign policy. In this print I wanted to show the gap between the pro- and anti-war movement and also the falling apart of American unity.
