FACULTY EXPECTATIONS IN  THEATRE

RE. PORTFOLIO ESSAYS

It is rare that theatre gets life experience learning portfolios.   Many of our courses (acting, directing, design) require review of process as well as product.   Some evaluation is possible through visual media (photos, video, renderings, etc.) but a fluid dialogue is needed to fully probe the student's collaboration with the artistic team during design meetings or rehearsals.   In other areas such as theatre history or literature, the more conventional means of assessment would work well.

First, some form of live contact (in person, phone, email) needs to happen since details in any performance/design experience need to be discussed.   A strong point of view about theatre art and craft is expected.   A detailed description of collaboration with others on a theatre project is helpful.   Overall artistic vision for each project helps provide a context for choices made before and during rehearsal.   Training, experience, readings, etc. gives us a sense of background and outlook.

Since there is no release time for our own production work, turnaround during the rehearsal and performance periods throughout the academic year will be slow.

A list of venues in which their work was performed/viewed is needed.   We also consider awards, grants, and other recognition of good work helpful.
