FACULTY EXPECTATIONS IN MULTIMEDIA

RE. PORTFOLIO ESSAYS

1. The general philosophy of above-named discipline regarding Assessment of Prior Experiential Learning essays may be summarized as follows:

Multimedia Development is an applied discipline which involves the design and development of interactive software which may be delivered as a stand-alone product or via the Internet. Since most interactive products incorporate various digital media such as images, audio, and video, some courses introduce fundamental concepts for working with such media. APEL essays may address the content of courses in media development or in design and programming with multimedia authoring tools.

2. Describe the nature of any dialogue expected between faculty in above-named discipline and students preparing portfolio essays in the discipline.

Students may wish to discuss specific course outcomes with the faculty who teach the courses to ascertain to what extent, and how, their experiences relate to various courses. Students seeking APEL credit should be able to articulate their experience in a manner appropriate for someone who has completed college courses in the subject material.

3. Describe the nature of any specific requirements the above-named discipline will have regarding contents of the portfolio materials i.e., documentation, essay, bibliography were applicable, etc.

All essays requesting multimedia credit must address how the experience is approximately equivalent to particular courses offered by EOU's CS/MM program. This requirement is particularly important when upper division credit is requested. Essays should discuss the complete process of any production experiences, and appendices should include all pertinent design documents. If credit is requested for production experience, copies or CD's or URL's for web sites should be included..

4. Describe issues regarding the general turnaround time for review of portfolio materials in the above-named discipline.

The turnaround time during Christmas break and summer vacation will probably be longer than normal.

5. Provide any additional information that will help portfolio students in developing materials for faculty review in the above-named discipline.

We suggest that essays be technical and detailed.
